I’ve been thinking A LOT about this because healing, truly, is no trifling matter. This year, I decided to unburden myself of all the trauma I’ve been carrying and I can attest to the fact that is it more painful than holding on. I’m starting to believe that many people never truly heal because it requires us to let ourselves completely break — with no idea what’s on the other side. But trauma, it’s familiar.

This is so incredibly true. In healing so much recently, I've been in so much grief that you'd think I was holding onto my trauma. But no, it's often the ones who prance around seemingly well that are usually the ones with so much trauma bursting at the seams of their hearts — yet they refuse to do the tending. And the ones who seem to be clouded by darkness and carrying a lot of pain are usually the ones who are actually doing the healing work. I think we mistake that to be healing means that our world is a joyful bubble of sunshine, but it's rather storm and rain and getting through the root of that trauma.

"but what happens when, rather than ignoring or denying our trauma, we invite it in as a guide?" it took a long time for me to appreciate the gifts of my trauma. pain--after we are healed from it--makes us stronger, more resourceful.

"perhaps healing hurts more than staying wounded." yes, it sure does. it's so much easier to stay wounded than it is to take closer looks at ourselves, than it is to acknowledge difficult truths about what we have allowed ourselves to become. trauma does to us--it can be the gift or the curse--what we've given it permission to do.

yes to all this! thank you for addressing this tender topic. well said and beautifully written. 💜

Toni Morrison has written about (paraphrasing) writing in such a way that your voice is felt, and almost assumed by the reader. When I experience this, it’s like…uncovering or witnessing magic.

You have woven wisdom so beautifully here…so much juice and meat. Thank you for allowing us to see ourselves through you, and for seeing yourself in us.
